Semana de arte e educação da UNESCO 2014

Starting in 2012, UNESCO declared the fourth week of May every year International Arts Education Week.

In 2014, the Arts Education week will be from 19-23 of May. During this week, CICLO will contribute with events in Cape Town, St. Petersburg, Rio de Jainero and Copenhagen along with six other Danish cities.

“Creativity is at the heart of being human. Culture and Education sectors are being made to acknowledge the value of arts education in promoting creativity, innovation and cultural diversity world wide.”

Why arts education is important
The International Arts Education Week aims at increasing the international community’s awareness on the importance of arts education and at reinforcing its cooperation by promoting cultural diversity, intercultural dialogue and social cohesion.

To explain why arts education is important, Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova wrote:

As a vector of dialogue in the loftiest sense, art speeds up social inclusion and tolerance in our multicultural, connected societies. A painting, an artifact, a piece of ancestral music – each of these speaks volumes about the history of civilizations and the ties that bind them. Young people must be taught to love art: this will help them understand each other better.

The awareness of art can be acquired from an early age and maintained throughout life. Guided by the conviction that creativity and the arts, and learning about them, contribute to building prosperous and peaceful societies UNESCO encourages its Member States to support arts education, at school and beyond.

Arts education is important for fostering generations that are capable of reinventing the world they have inherited. It supports the vitality of cultural identities by emphasising their links with other cultures, thus contributing to the construction of a shared heritage. It helps to form tolerant and dynamic citizens for a globalising world.
